Written by Shelley Boettsher, the Calgary Herald wine columnist Good new for Alberta’s own Field Stone Fruit winery — the winery’s products are now available at the Calgary Farmers’ Market. (Ask for a sample at the Field Stone booth near the front doors.) Field Stone has a big list of wines made from Alberta fruit: Strawberry-Rhubarb, Cherry, Bumbleberry, Wildberry, you name it.
I had a chance to work the bottling line at Field Stone a couple of years ago. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the fields of raspberries and strawberries are literally right outside the winery doors. The crew (all family, not including me) was so welcoming and wonderful — they even fed me a big lunch afterward (with Field Stone wine, of course) despite the fact that I was pretty useless on the production line. (Not so good with the corking machine.) (And, for that matter, not so good at the labelling either.) (I excel at drinking, though!)
Still, every time I open a bottle, I am instantly transported back to summer — and that summer in particular. I love it poured on ice cream, and I’ve been meaning to turn a bottle into a batch of brilliantly hued martinis one of these days. Or just open a bottle, pour and sip — a lovely way to end a meal.
One more reason to like Field Stone: it’s a cool local business — and a cool way to supplement a locavore diet!
